Once upon a time, American Medicine as practiced in the 1800's was predominately driven by the use of plant medicines. These old Materia Medica's and Dispensatory type books are laden with a wealth of history and knowledgeable plant medicine usage. Those of us who take herbal medicine seriously like to go back to the source, when doctor's and pharmacists used plant medicine daily. These type of books are really indispensable, especially if you want to be an effective herbalist.
Book Description: A Practical Treatise of Materia Medica and Therapeutics by Shoemaker, M.D.8vo - 23.5 x 15.5 cm.; viii - 1255 pp. Black cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine and blind stamped border rules on the front and back boards. First published in 1889, this is the seventh and revised edition. The externals show quite mild shelf wear and that mostly to the spine tips. The front hinge is tender with tears in the end papers at the gutter that has been repaired using a hinged linen book tape. Otherwise clean and sound. This volume comes from the personal library of a turn of the century general practitioner from Eganville, a small jewel of a town in the Ottawa Valley, Ontario.
The wealth of herbal and plant medicine information in these books is beyond most people's belief. It is immense.
